Trail Blazer Tuesdays: Week in Review

The Trail Blazers started off the week with the Los Angeles Lakers. The struggles continued for the Blazers as they squandered a lead at halftime, getting dominated in the third quarter. As usual, Damian Lillard produced for the team – totaling 35 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds. Outside of him, there really wasn’t much production outside of Gary Trent Jr. – who posted 19 points.

Looking at the stat sheet, it was another game with way too many turnovers and not enough ball movement. 19 assists and 15 turnovers. Trail Blazers need to do better! I would like to see them aim for about 30 assists and <=10 turnovers as a team.

The Lakers were without Anthony Davis once again, Dennis Schroder helped Lebron James with the scoring after a couple games rest. Most teams in today’s NBA are trying to build teams around shooting, but the Lakers chose to build their team around one of the most physical players in the league in LeBron James. This has paid big for them and most shooting teams can’t keep the consistency with the Lakers in a playoff series.

The Blazers bounced back in a big way defeating the Charlotte Hornets Monday night. This was a game that involved a lot of perimeter play. The Blazers shot the lights out from deep – shooting 52% from three in the contest.

Statistically this game was pretty even across the board, but the shooting from the Blazers was too much for Charlotte. Carmelo lead the Blazers in scoring with 29 points, followed by Damian’s 23 points and Robert Covington’s 21 points. Gary Trent Jr. had another strong game for Portland.

The Blazers still sit in the #5 slot in the West, and I look for them to stay in the 3-6 position all season. This team has a wealth of talent and if they stay and get healthier going into the playoffs. This team could definitely compete for the NBA Title. Charles Barkley picked them to win the West.
